Not looking forward, not looking back
along that long imaginary line of time
that runs through consciousness.
The entirety is held
at that momentary axis
that anchors the spin
of a planet, star or
dervish in Konya
The vertical moment
which pours
past present future
into that soft ball
at the belly
of the universe
And then we return
Back to our regularly scheduled programming

So New Year’s isn’t a time for resolutions and the like for me. But it is a time to take a pause and realize what’s happening in my life and the world.  This poem was written for my Buddhist blog but as I collect my poetry here I thought I’d reproduce it.

  1. buddhism teaches us mindfulness in all things. This means knowning the things that we’ve done, and also the things we plan to do. One cannot be always forward looking without suffering a loss of self. Looking backwards, like you say, even on an occassional basis has many benefits.

instead of rushing forwards into the dreams and infatuations of 09, yes, reflect on what has past. How one could correct certain actions, understand certain wisdoms.

    great poem, cheers for sharing!
